The Lad from Point de Bute

by Richard & Esther Provencher

authors of A Boy Named Wish

"...the thought of war was more like a game, as in playing catch me if you can in the back pasture. Or having a hearty game of checkers with the lads, trying to capture each other's pieces."
The story of The Lad from Point de Bute focuses on one day in the life of John (Johnny) Trenholm, Jr., during the summer of his 12th year, and depicts a way of life in a farming village in the Cape Chignecto area of Nova Scotia in 1774.

After finding a message hidden in the family barn, Johnny becomes obsessed with questions about who really owns his family's farm. Seeking answers, he learns about the Acadian Expulsion of 1755, when British ships collected area farmers and shipped them off to other countries.

During his search with his best friend, Mattie, drumbeats of war with the Americans approach on the horizon.
